Guest Wi-Fi: A separate name does not prove isolation

Networks & Wi-Fi · 26.10.2026 · about 2 min

Plan visitor access deliberately

Visitors often need internet access without access to internal applications or files. A guest network should serve that specific purpose. Start by defining the required functions: is browser access enough, is a video call needed or should a particular presentation service be reachable? Every additional connection to internal resources needs a deliberate decision. Conveniently sharing access to the company network is not a substitute for planning and makes it harder to understand who can reach which resources later.

Technical boundaries must work together

A different wireless network name does not itself prove that internal systems are inaccessible. Separation needs to be designed across the relevant network components and rules. Depending on the environment, these include access points, switches, routing and the firewall. Have the responsible IT team assess the implementation. The important outcome is what a connected guest device can actually reach and what it cannot. A correctly labelled settings screen is not sufficient evidence of that outcome.

Organise everyday operation too

Agree how visitors receive access details and who can change them when required. Also decide how temporary events and large numbers of simultaneous devices will be handled. Guest access may share internet connectivity or radio resources with other applications. A test under ordinary conditions is useful but does not replace consideration of a larger event. Document unusual requirements so that a colleague providing cover can explain visitor access without exposing internal administrative credentials or relying on an informal password exchange.

Test allowed and blocked access

Create a short test list with IT. Check the intended internet connection and also test unwanted access to internal services explicitly. Include the network protocols and device groups actually used in your environment. Repeat the checks after changes to switches, firewall rules or wireless configuration. A useful guest network is more than a convenient connection on its first day. Its boundaries remain understandable and testable while authorised visitors can use the agreed functions without unnecessary obstacles or access to unrelated business information.
